Quick Answer: Which Weapon Family Wins?
Melee wins the economy — no ammunition, ever. Ranged wins the fight — distance is life against guns and warlords. Apocalypter is built around carrying both: the weapons database page tracks the families; this comparison tells you when to draw which.
| Criterion | Melee Weapons | Firearms |
|---|---|---|
| Ammo cost | None | Caliber-matched, continuous |
| Safe vs armed enemies | No — you close into their fire | Yes — fight at range |
| Boss/warlord viability | Risky, greedy DPS | The intended tool |
| Early game availability | Immediate | When ammo allows |
| Skill floor | Spacing and retreat discipline | Ammo budgeting |
The classic rookie death: maining a gun into an ammo drought. When the caliber runs dry mid-camp, the melee weapon in slot two is the difference between a story and a reload.
The Verdict by Situation
- Daily looting: melee. Silent, free, and the scavengers are melee-weighted anyway.
- Approaching any camp with guns: ranged. Let the caliber do the walking.
- Warlord hunts: ranged primary, melee backup, armor and first aid kits mandatory.
- Ammo famine: melee exclusively, raid specifically for your gun's caliber, then switch back.
